Defence industry in Wales

Inquiry

Over 160 companies which support the defence sector have operations based in Wales. Amongst these include several prime contractors and a significant network of the SMEs.  In addition, the MOD’s Defence & Electronics Components Agency (DECA), based at MOD Sealand in North Wales, also has a £500 million contract with the US Department for Defense for the maintenance of fast jet components.

This inquiry will examine the defence industry in Wales, looking specifically at defence manufacturing and cyber security.

The objective of the inquiry is to answer four key questions:

  • How important are the defence manufacturing and cyber security sectors to the economy in Wales?
  • What are the opportunities for growth in defence manufacturing and cyber security in Wales in the future?
  • How important are Wales’ defence manufacturing and cyber security sectors to the overall UK capability?
  • What role should the UK Government play, in collaboration with the Welsh Government, in promoting and maintaining defence manufacturing and cyber security in Wales?
