UK universities’ engagement with autocracies

Non-inquiry session

This session seeks to ascertain to what extent the Government has responded to concerns expressed in its 2019 report "A cautious embrace: defending democracies in an age of autocracy" about autocracies' influence on academic freedom. The inquiry will assess how effectively UK universities are responding to the systemic challenge posed by China to academic freedom and to national security while continuing to cooperate with China on mutually beneficial programmes of teaching and research.
