Sexism and inequality in football

Interest in men’s and women’s football at professional and international levels is currently on a high after the Lionesses victory at the women’s EURO 2022 tournament and the upcoming Men’s FIFA World Cup in Qatar in November and December 2022.

But equal access to football has a chequered history and massive inequalities persist between the women’s and men’s games. While recent years have seen a significant increase in diversity in the men’s game, sexist and misogynist attitudes towards female fans, players, managers, officials, and journalists/broadcasters appear commonplace.
