Food insecurity

Inquiry

Report and Government response published

The International Development Committee has now published a Report on Food insecurity and concluded that the government does not appear to have a plan to tackle the catastrophic worldwide hunger crisis caused by the war in Ukraine and other factors. The report said nearly 50 million people in 43 countries are on the edge of famine and that food shortages could, without immediate action, lead to an “explosion of child deaths” in the Horn of Africa.

The International Development Committee report made several recommendations for a comprehensive strategy to address food insecurity, including:

  • increasing humanitarian funding;
  • promoting sustainable agriculture;
  • supporting Ukraine to deliver its food produce to internal and external markets; and
  • working with international partners to avert famine.
