UK aid for refugee host countries

Inquiry

Report and Government response published

The International Development Committee held an inquiry into UK support for countries which host large numbers of refugees. The inquiry focused on the case studies of Jordan and Lebanon, both of which have hosted large numbers of Palestinian refugees since 1948 and refugees from Syria for more than a decade.

The Report found that an ambitious global strategy is essential to ensure that countries that respond to humanitarian crises by welcoming refugees are supported over the short, medium and long term. Current practices fail both refugees and the countries that host them.

In addition, the international community needs to commit to finding political solutions to enable refugees to return home. The report says the international community must be able to demonstrate its lasting commitment to the host country and provide certainty that it will ‘stay the course’ of the refugee response.
