Minister questioned on future of local journalism

The Digital, Culture, Media and Sport Committee is expected to ask about government support for local journalism, amidst reports that existing public and industry support disproportionately benefits larger publishers. Possible funding methods, such as tax breaks, innovation funds, or making it easier for newspapers to gain charitable status may be discussed.

MPs are also expected to examine the impact that forthcoming BBC licence fee negotiations may have on the BBC’s Local Democracy Reporter Service. The Minister may be asked about the government’s progress in implementing key recommendations from the 2019 Cairncross Review into the future of journalism.
