Common rules for commercial use of unmanned aircraft

Inquiry

The Commission’s Strategy included a proposal to extend the remit of Europe's Aviation Safety Agency to include responsibility for the civilian and commercial operation of unmanned aircraft or drones. In line with the Committee's previous report on the subject, Civilian Use of Drones in the EU, the Government supported the Commission's risk-based approach, and its focus on the type of operation to be carried out rather than just size of the aircraft.

The Committee raised concerns about the extensive use of Delegated Acts by the Commission, and asked whether industry was being sufficiently engaged in designing the new rules. The Government has subsequently responded to the Committee’s letter, and Minister of State for Transport, Robert Goodwill MP, gave evidence to the Committee on 28 April.

The Explanatory Memorandum, as well as the letters of correspondence between the Committee and the Government, are available below.
