On 19 March 2015, the Committee held a public seminar with academics, think tanks, journalists and others to discuss the report’s conclusions. Presentations were given by three guest speakers: Michael Binyon OBE (The Times), Sir Rodric Braithwaite GCMG (former British Ambassador to the Soviet Union and Russia) and Rory Stewart OBE MP (Chairman, House of Commons Defence Committee).
Following this, on 24 March 2015, the report was debated in the House of Lords Chamber. The Chairman of the External Affairs Sub-Committee, Lord Tugendhat, opened the debate, and Baroness Anelay of St Johns responded on behalf of the Government.
Background
The House of Lords inquiry will examine recent relations between the EU and Russia and consider how recent events should help to shape future relations. The Committee will also look at the means by which the EU and Russia conduct their foreign policy towards each other, and how economic interdependencies shape wider foreign policy.
Timeline
Public hearings will be held from July 2014 until the end of the year. The Committee aims to report to the House, with recommendations, in the first half of 2015. The report will receive responses from the Government and the European Commission, and is likely to be debated in the House.
