Committee publishes ABI view on pensions dashboard doubts

18 July 2018

Following press speculation yesterday that Secretary of State for Work and Pensions Esther McVey is considering abandoning plans for a national pensions dashboard, intended to consolidate state and private pension information into a single platform, the Committee asked pensions minister Guy Opperman to confirm his October 2017 commitment that ”make no mistake, the dashboard will happen” in evidence in Parliament this morning.

The minister responded "Clearly you can quote back to me things I've said in the past, and I fully accept things I've said in the past. That said, the department and government have been doing a feasibility study, they are then reviewing that, and a decision will be made …. The long and short of it is, you'll understand that this is a matter on which the government has to make a decision. No decision has been made. When it has been made, it will be communicated in the appropriate and proper way, and it's probably not appropriate for me to comment any further than that."

In response to the press reports yesterday, which included speculation that the move might be to allow DWP to focus on the beleaguered roll out of Universal Credit, the Association of British Insurers, who have been leading industry efforts to develop the dashboard, wrote to the Committee expressing their concerns about the “threat to the pensions dashboard”. The letter, published today (attached), concludes: “DWP is the largest Department in Whitehall and is funded by the taxpayer to do more than one thing at a time. There is no reason why this project should not be proceeding at pace given the work already done and the high levels of support from industry.”
