Volkswagen emissions scandal: Government promises to fight for customer compensation

17 October 2016

The Transport Committee has published the Government Response to the Committee's Third Report of Session 2016-17, Volkswagen emissions scandal and vehicle type approval.

Chair's comments

Chair of the Transport Committee, Louise Ellman MP, said:

"I am pleased that the Department for Transport has promised to fight for the compensation that over a million UK Volkswagen customers deserve.

While it is encouraging that the Department has taken some steps to improve the transparency of the vehicle type approval system, their actions still fall short in a number of areas.

I also remain concerned that despite VW telling us a year ago that it hoped to have all vehicles fixed by the end of 2016, to date barely one in ten have been put right.

We will be keeping a close eye on this matter to ensure that the Government is held to account on its promises to support customers."
