Following public consultations, an ethical review by the Nuffield Council on Bioethics, and scientific reviews by the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority, the Government has decided to proceed with putting regulations before Parliament for the introduction of mitochondrial donation. The Science and Technology Committee held a one-off evidence session to consider the science of mitochondrial donation on Wednesday 22 October when they will hear from the Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Public Health, Jane Ellison, and experts in the field.
Announcing the one-off session, Andrew Miller MP, Chair of the Science and Technology Committee, said:
“It is right that the safety and efficacy of mitochondrial replacement techniques are subject to scrutiny in the House. As the Science and Technology Committee, we consider it important that we take the opportunity to scrutinise further the scientific evidence on mitochondrial donation”.
