The Coroner Service in England and Wales

The Justice Committee will hold an online live broadcast meeting at 2.30pm on 17 November 2020 on the Coroner Service in England and Wales. This is the final evidence session of the inquiry.

Purpose of the session

The session will cover questions about:

  • The impact of COVID-19 on the Coroner Service
  • How the Chief Coroner and the Government see the role of the Coroner Service
  • How to improve consistency of coroners’ judicial decisions
  • Progress since the Coroners and Justice Act 2009
  • The Ministry of Justice’s 2015 review of the Coroner Service
  • Support for bereaved people, including legal aid
  • How well the Coroner Service meets the public interest in identifying and preventing avoidable future deaths
  • The case for and against a National Coroner Service
