The EU’s Common Fisheries Policy (CFP) aims to conserve fish stocks by setting catch limits based on scientific advice. These limits are discussed and agreed by the Fisheries Council at the end of each calendar year. This is the annual proposal for 2020’s fishing opportunities under the CFP; it applies to EU waters, and to some waters that are managed jointly by the EU and third countries.
We are writing to the Minister to raise concerns about the degree of continued unsustainable fishing, query whether the quota uplift is justified and sustainable in light of likely non-compliance with the landing obligation, to request updates on the UK’s applications to join Regional Fisheries Management Organisations (RFMOs) as an independent coastal state, and to seek further information regarding the ongoing trials of Remote Electronic Monitoring (REM).
