Animal Sentience Bill: MPs to quiz Minister

3 September 2021

The Environment, Food and Rural Affairs Committee is to hold the second evidence session of its Animal Welfare (Sentience) Bill inquiry. MPs will explore whether this Bill is the right approach to ensuring Government policy has all due regard to protecting the welfare needs of sentient animals.

The Committee will quiz the Minister about how the Bill addresses the flaws in the 2017 draft Bill, in particular the risk of animal welfare reviews being subject to judicial review.

It will also seek assurances about the independence of the proposed Animal Sentience Committee, and whether the Committee should be part of Defra.

The session will also explore the extension of the Bill’s coverage to invertebrate animals, and the Government’s engagement with the scientific community.

Witnesses to appear at 2:30pm:

  • Lord Benyon, Parliamentary Under Secretary of State, Defra
  • Marc Casale, Head of Animal Welfare, Defra
