In this session, MPs will examine the broad international and domestic policy and legal framework for asylum. It will look at how the Equality Act is applied in the treatment of people seeking asylum and refugees in the UK asylum process, and consider equality implications of proposals for asylum reforms.
The session will consider arguments for and against reforms of the process outlined in the Nationality and Borders Bill, currently at Committee stage in the House of Lords, including the proposed introduction of “differential treatment” of refugees. The Committee will also explore the role of international cooperation in establishing a fair, safe asylum system.
