Nigeria-UK relations inquiry turns focus to climate finance

MPs will hear from experts in climate change and international finance, with potential subjects including commitments made at COP26 on climate finance, their implications for Nigeria, and where the UK Government can play a role in mobilising investment. The session is likely to explore the environmental challenges facing Nigeria, which the Committee’s inquiry has heard is a focal point in the climate emergency.

The Committee may also seek the views of witnesses on initiatives seeking to mitigate harm caused by climate change, including the Great Green Wall, as well as potential strategies to tackle barriers to foreign private investment in Nigeria.

The first witness to address the Committee is Ms Monique Barbut, who served as the Executive Secretary of the United National Convention to Combat Desertification between 2013 and 2019. She led the Technology, Industry and Economics Division of the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) from 2003-2006, and is President of the Board of Trustees of WWF France.

MPs will then hear hold a second panel with Mr Robbie Marwick and Mr Andrew Skipper. Mr Marwick has led project development in sustainable investment in the region for risk capital company SYSTEMIQ. Mr Skipper is Head of international law firm Hogan Lovells’ Africa Practice, and co-chairs the UK Government Africa Investors Forum.
