Marking its first evidence session of the Net Zero Aviation and Shipping inquiry, the Environmental Audit Committee (EAC) will hear from experts on key issues and challenges facing the sectors as they move to decarbonisation.
Meeting details
Purpose of the session
On the first panel, MPs will be hearing from Rolls Royce, Sustainable Aviation and Cranfield University with a focus on the aviation sector. On the second panel, Maritime UK, UK Chamber of Shipping and the University of Manchester will be discussing opportunities and challenges for the shipping sector. The evidence session is intended to set the scene on the key issues future evidence gathering is likely to focus on.
The evidence session follows the recent publication of the Government’s Net Zero Strategy where it outlined its ambition to ensure all forms of travel – including aviation and shipping – to run on green forms of energy, with suggestions that hydrogen could play a key role. It has also recently been announced that companies such as Amazon, Ikea and Unilever have committed to using only zero-emission ships to transport their cargo by 2040.
