Background

Ministers are consulting on the possible privatisation of Channel 4 – the government’s preferred option - and now peers are investigating its remit and ownership.

Possible questions

Possible questions and areas for discussion with witnesses include:

  • To what extent is Channel 4 unsustainable, and over what timescale? What does the Government mean by sustainability in this context?
  • If Channel 4 is privatised, what would be the benefits and risks of strengthening or codifying the channel’s remit?
  • Has the Government made an impact assessment of the possible effects of privatisation on the independent production sector?
  • How has the Government considered the possible privatisation of Channel 4 as part of the wider UK PSB system?
