Purpose of the session

This session, the first of the inquiry, will ask the Secretary of State for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy for an update on the Government’s assessment of Liberty Steel and any steps it may take to intervene. It will review what led to the last major crisis in the steel industry in 2015-16 and what lessons can be learned from previous Government and industry responses. It will examine current challenges facing the steel industry and how these might be overcome, and also consider how the industry can meet the Government’s target to reach net zero by 2050.
