Could the UK be doing more to support humanitarian efforts in Cuba? MPs investigate

The Foreign Affairs Committee will hold a one-off session on Monday 19 October to ask whether there is a role for the UK, and international partners, in facilitating a diplomatic solution to prevent further deterioration in the humanitarian crisis in Cuba.

In this session, MPs will seek to establish the trajectory of the humanitarian and political crisis in Cuba and ask how the new US approach to the Western Hemisphere has affected this.

MPs could explore the impact of the escalating US economic and trade embargo on ordinary Cubans and may examine the challenges humanitarian organisations face in importing and distributing humanitarian aid.

Questions are likely to focus on the US Administration’s strategic aims as well as the motivations of the Cuban government and the likelihood of political change in Cuba. The Committee may also consider what Cuba’s economic decline could mean for both the country and the region.
