Committee hears from BBC senior leadership on BBC Charter review
The Communications and Digital Committee takes evidence from Matt Brittin, Director General of the BBC, and Dr Samir Shah, Chair of the BBC, in its final evidence session on BBC Charter renewal.
Meeting details
Background
The BBC’s constitution is set out in a Royal Charter, alongside a framework agreement. The current BBC Charter ends on 31 December 2027. Last year, the Government launched a consultation on its proposals for the BBC’s next Charter.
In this session, the Committee will discuss the new Director General’s vision for the BBC during the next Charter period. This will include how the BBC can adapt in a period of reduced funding, changing viewing habits and growing competition from global platforms.
Possible areas for discussion
Possible areas for discussion include:
- how the BBC can reach audiences in an increasingly platform-dominated media environment;
- opportunities for greater collaboration between the UK’s public service broadcasters, including in response to growing competition from global platforms and increasing market consolidation; and
- the BBC’s role in driving economic growth, including by supporting regional production, skills and innovation across the UK.
