Ministers update Committee on AI and copyright progress

The Communications and Digital Committee takes evidence from Ministers Liz Kendall and Lisa Nandy, following up on its report on AI, copyright and the creative industries.

Meeting details

At 2:30pm: Oral evidence
Inquiry AI and copyright
Secretary of State for Science, Innovation and Technology at Department for Science, Innovation and Technology
Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport at Department for Culture, Media and Sport
Interim Director General, Emerging Technology and AI at Department for Science, Innovation and Technology
Director of Creative Industries and Artificial Intelligence at Department for Culture, Media and Sport

Background

In its report, the Committee recommended that the Government rule out introducing a new commercial text and data mining exception with an opt-out mechanism into copyright law. It also called for transparency about AI training data to be made a statutory obligation for large AI developers, and for the Government to direct its sovereign AI efforts towards transparent, domestically governed models underpinned by copyright compliance.

Possible areas for discussion

Possible areas for discussion with witnesses include:

  • what progress the Government has made on AI and copyright since it published its report and impact assessment in March;
  • what options for reform of UK copyright law remain under consideration; and
  • concerns that delays in reaching a decision on AI and copyright are holding back the development of a market for licensing training data.
