MPs question Bòrd na Gàidhlig on how to support Gaelic language broadcasting 

The Scottish Affairs Committee holds the first session of its inquiry into Gaelic Broadcasting, hearing from academics and Bòrd na Gàidhlig, the public body responsible for promoting Gaelic. 

Gaelic is an important part of Scotland’s cultural identity. This inquiry was launched to examine the funding and legislative status of Gaelic Broadcasting, considering how to protect and strengthen it for the future.

In the first panel, the cross-party committee will hear from academics focused on the Gaelic language. Questions may explore census data on Gaelic language skills, revitalisation of the language, Gaelic Medium Education and the Gaelic broadcasting sector.  

In the second panel, the committee will question the Chair and the Chief Executive Officer of Bòrd na Gàidhlig on its role in promoting Gaelic language and culture. MPs will investigate the Gaelic Language (Scotland) Act 2005 and the Scottish Languages Act 2025, as well as the European Charter for Regional or Minority Languages.  

Questions could also discuss the 2024 Media Act and Gaelic broadcasting’s place in the BBC Charter Renewal.
