MPs quiz Ofsted Chief Inspector on teacher wellbeing
On Tuesday the Education Committee will question His Majesty’s Chief Inspector, Sir Martyn Oliver, as part of its twice-yearly scrutiny of Ofsted, focusing on the watchdog’s progress over the past year.

MPs are expected to press Sir Martyn on the steps Ofsted has taken to improve teacher wellbeing during inspections in the wake the tragic death of headteacher Ruth Perry in January 2023, following an Ofsted inspection.
In October 2025, Sir Martyn said Ofsted had completed 68 out of 132 actions arising from Ruth Perry’s death, including recommendations made by the predecessor Education Committee. MPs are likely to ask Sir Martyn what steps Ofsted is taking to reduce the burdens it places on school leaders.
MPs will also examine the rollout of Ofsted’s new inspection framework, which introduces updated criteria, a five-point grading scale, and a stronger emphasis on inclusion, SEND provision, disadvantaged pupils and safeguarding.
The session may also cover independent complaints, assessing inclusion, early years safeguarding, and the new powers it has been given by the Children’s Wellbeing and Schools Act, including to inspect academy trusts.
