Can low-energy computing help solve AI energy demands?
The Science, Innovation and Technology Committee holds the first evidence session of its inquiry into whether low-energy computing could help to meet growing energy demands from increased use of AI.
An emerging area of innovation – neuromorphic photonics, which combines silicon photonics with neuromorphic computing principles – has been highlighted as a potential solution to tackle the energy burden of AI.
The committee initially heard about this idea during its “Under the Microscope” engagement exercise.

In the first panel, the cross-party committee will hear from academics on AI-related energy demands, the UK’s funding approach to low-energy computing and the deployment of these computing capabilities.
In the second panel, MPs will talk to experts and explore views on edge AI, the potential impact of low-energy computing on AI-related energy demands and the government’s new AI Hardware Plan.
