Background
The BBC’s constitution is set out in a Royal Charter, alongside a framework agreement. The current BBC Charter ends on 31 December 2027. Last year, the Government launched a consultation on its proposals for the BBC’s next Charter.
To feed into the Government’s work, the Committee is holding a short series of sessions on options for the BBC’s next Charter in the lead up to the summer recess.
Possible areas for discussion
Possible areas for discussion with witnesses include:
- how UK broadcasters are adapting to changing audience habits;
- how public service content can remain visible, trusted and distinctive in an increasingly platform-led media environment;
- whether there is scope for deeper collaboration between UK broadcasters and how the next BBC Charter could support this; and
- how the next Charter could boost the BBC’s role in driving economic growth without distorting the wider broadcasting market.
