Lord Norton to be questioned on Public Inquiries
Next Tuesday, the Public Administration and Constitutional Affairs Committee (PACAC) will continue its inquiry into the process which underpins deciding to launch Public Inquiries and how implementation of their recommendations is scrutinised.
MPs will question Lord Norton, who chaired the House of Lords’ Statutory Inquiries Committee (SIC). The SIC examined the effectiveness of the law and practice of inquiries under the Inquiries Act 2005, such as the Grenfell Tower and Covid-19 inquiry, and published its findings in a report in September 2024.
Meeting details
The purpose of the session is to explore SIC’s findings and to consider the potential role of the House of Lords in any new system.
Considering the SIC’s finding that “the inquiry process can be extremely arduous for victims, survivors and families”, MPs may also ask how their needs could better be considered when deciding whether to establish an inquiry. Members of the Committee may also ask about the importance of monitoring inquiry recommendations, and the role which select committees, central government or public bodies could have in doing so.
