Deterring Russia: Committee explores UK-EU defence cooperation and financial deterrence
On Monday the Joint Committee on the National Security Strategy will hear evidence on the role of UK-EU defence cooperation and economic sanctions in deterring Russian aggression.
The Committee is currently exploring the UK’s ability to impose costs and constraints on Russia to deter aggression and change the risk calculation within key parts of its system, including its security services.
In the first panel, MPs and members of the House of Lords will explore the current state of the UK’s cooperation with the European Union on defence and security, as well as the defence-industrial base.

The Committee is also likely to consider whether deeper partnerships with the EU could offset strategic reliance on the United States.
In the second panel, experts are likely to assess the current state of Russia’s economy, including its profits from oil and gas given the recent closure of the Strait of Hormuz.
Committee members will explore the success so far of economic sanctions and freezing Russian assets in deterring aggression and how the UK and EU could apply further pressure.
