Committee hears from Bectu and creative sector organisations on BBC Charter review

In its next oral evidence session looking at BBC Charter renewal, the Communications and Digital Committee takes evidence from Bectu, the trade union representing workers in broadcasting, theatre and entertainment, as well arts charities and industry bodies.

Meeting details

At 2:15pm: Oral evidence
Work BBC Charter Renewal (Non-inquiry session)
Chair at ScreenSkills
Deputy General Secretary and Head of Bectu at Prospect
Director at Campaign for the Arts
Chair at Create Central

The session focuses on the role the BBC plays in supporting the UK’s creative economy and what priority that should be given in the new BBC Charter.

Background

The BBC’s constitution is set out in a Royal Charter, alongside a framework agreement. The current BBC Charter ends on 31 December 2027. Last year, the Government launched a consultation on its proposals for the BBC’s next Charter.

To feed into the Government’s work, in the lead up to the summer recess the Committee will discuss options for the BBC next Charter with a range of witnesses, including the BBC itself.

Possible areas for discussion

Possible areas for discussion with witnesses include:

  • the ways the BBC has supported the UK creative economy under the current Charter;
  • the proposal in the Government’s Green Paper for the BBC to have a new public purpose to drive economic growth;
  • how the BBC can support investment in the creative industries across the whole of the UK; and
  • how the BBC can support skills and workforce development in the creative sector.
