Ministry of Defence vs HM Treasury: how do the experts view Whitehall’s approach to defence spending?

Next Wednesday afternoon, the Treasury Committee will hold a public evidence session questioning experts from RAND Europe, Make UK Defence and the Institute for Fiscal Studies on the United Kingdom’s defence spending.

Meeting details

At 2:00pm: Private discussion
Work Defence spending and finance (Non-inquiry session)
At 2:15pm: Oral evidence
Work Defence spending and finance (Non-inquiry session)
Assistant Director, Defence & Security at RAND Europe
Director-General at Make UK Defence
Senior research economist at Institute for Fiscal Studies

The purpose of the session is to understand where and how the key decisions on funding the UK’s defence capabilities are made. This is with particular regard to the dynamics between the key Whitehall departments involved in signing off on defence spending changes.

Half a year after it was originally due for publication, MPs are likely to ask about the potential impacts of the ongoing delays to the Government’s Defence Investment Plan.

Questions may also cover the Government’s 3.5% defence spending commitment, procurement within the Ministry of Defence and whether defence spending can meaningfully generate economic growth in the UK.

Location

The Grimond Room, Portcullis House
