Lord Robertson and Fiona Hill to give evidence to MPs and Lords

On Monday 27 April, the Joint Committee on the National Security Strategy will hear evidence from Lord Robertson, a former UK Defence Secretary and NATO Secretary General, and Dr Fiona Hill, an expert in foreign policy and Senior Fellow at the Brookings Institution.

The session comes after Lord Robertson warned in a speech on 14 April of a “corrosive complacency” in Britain’s political leadership, where “lip service is paid to the risks, the threats, the bright red signals of danger but even a promised national conversation about defence can’t be started”.

You can watch this session on YouTube.

Committee members are likely to ask a range of questions including:

  • What has prevented the UK from starting a promised national conversation on defence and resilience?
  • How can the Government raise awareness of security risks without causing public panic?
  • What trade-offs in government spending might be needed to invest more in defence?
  • How engaged are different departments in security and resilience work across government?
