The Lords Science and Technology Committee is holding two evidence session for its inquiry into Innovation in the NHS: personalised medicines and AI, on the theme of health data for research. 

In the first of today’s sessions, the Committee will hear from Professor Andrew Morris, the inaugural Director of Health Data Research UK. In the second session, it will hear from Professor Cathie Sudlow, Director of the Usher Institute, University of Edinburgh, who authored a review into the use of health data.

  • What is the role of Health Data Research UK, and how does it fit into the wider health data landscape? 
  • What are your top priorities for the Government’s new Health Data Research Service? What does it need to get right in the early days in order to succeed? 
  • What lessons have been learned from past efforts to create a national health data platform?  
  • How should the Health Data Research Service manage complicated and delicate relationships with private companies in enabling commercial access to data?  
  • What is your perspective on the role of AI in health data research? 
  • Is the UK training enough data scientists, bioinformaticians, and health data specialists to deliver on the Government’s ambitions?

  • What are the key findings of your 2024 review, Uniting the UK’s Health Data?  
  • What are the barriers to using health data for research? 
  • What is your vision for the Health Data Research Service and how has the Government stepped up to that ambition so far?  
  • What does the Government need to do to build and maintain public confidence as it scales up data use for research and commercial purposes? 
  • When it comes to the economic potential of using AI in combination with huge datasets, what is the appropriate balance between commercial use and safeguarding data to maintain public trust?  
  • What are the key lessons from previous attempts to improve the UK’s health data and access to it for researchers?
