AI Minister to give evidence on combatting foreign disinformation

Kanishka Narayan MP, Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State (Minister for AI and Online Safety) at the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT), faces questions on foreign disinformation from the Foreign Affairs Committee at 10.30am on Tuesday 14 April.

Meeting details

At 10:30am: Oral evidence
Work Disinformation diplomacy: How malign actors are seeking to undermine democracy: follow-up (Non-inquiry session)
Minister for AI and Online Safety at Department for Science, Innovation and Technology
Director for Security and Online Harms at Department for Science, Innovation and Technology

This session follows the Committee’s recent report on foreign disinformation, which concluded that the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) should give greater priority to fighting disinformation abroad and that, even more importantly, the UK Government must work much harder to combat disinformation, which has the potential to seriously undermine the UK’s democracy.

The session will look at the threat posed to the UK’s democracy from hostile state-linked disinformation campaigns and DSIT’s role in combatting this threat.

As we approach the local elections, questions are likely to cover DSIT’s contribution to the Defending Democracy Taskforce, Joint Election Security and Preparedness (JESP) Unit and the development of tools to identify deepfakes. Members are also likely to ask about DSIT’s National Security and Online Information Team, previously the counter disinformation unit.

Questions are likely to cover the DSIT’s interactions with social media companies (X, Meta, TikTok etc.) over foreign disinformation and the role of the regulator Ofcom.
