Lord Maude to give evidence on public bodies
Next Tuesday, the Public Administration and Constitutional Affairs Committee (PACAC) will question Lord Maude, the former Cabinet Office Minister who introduced the Public Bodies Reform Programme.
Meeting details
The Public Bodies Reform Programme, often referred to as the ‘Bonfire of the Quangos’, led to the reduction of 290 public bodies from a total of more than 900 between 2010 and 2015. The purpose of the session is to explore how lessons from this work could inform further consolidation of the number of public bodies.
MPs are likely to also discuss the extent to which departments have sufficient oversight of their public bodies and whether the current process for closing them down is working.
Additionally, Lord Maude may also be asked for his opinion on the challenges of closing NHS England.
