MPs to hear from experts as Sudan crisis worsens
The International Development Committee is to hear from a range of experts about recent developments in the ongoing conflict and humanitarian emergency in Sudan.
The session follows the Committee’s October 2025 oral evidence session and comes as the crisis in Sudan continues to worsen.
Over 30 million people, nearly two-thirds of the population, now require humanitarian assistance, while several regional and international actors with strategic interests in Sudan are accused of supporting opposing sides and complicating peace efforts.
The Committee will look at current work on combating malnutrition in Sudan and ask about further resources this will require.
Meeting details
There will be a focus on diplomatic efforts to end the war, with witnesses likely to be asked whether current peace initiatives are realistically capable of delivering progress and how the UK should position itself to bolster such efforts.
The wider geopolitical context will be explored, with MPs examining the extent to which varying levels of western engagement have created space for Gulf states, Russia and other actors to assert influence in the region.
As the UAE is reported to sustain Sudanese paramilitary forces through regional supply networks operating via Libya, Chad, Uganda and South Sudan, the Committee could also consider whether the UK is prioritising its relationship with the UAE over the proper investigation of arms exports.
