MPs explore feasibility and impact of fixed links in Scotland’s islands
The Scottish Affairs Committee begins evidence sessions for its inquiry into fixed links on Wednesday 20 May, examining the potential benefits and challenges of permanent transport links like tunnels and bridges for island communities.
In the first panel, the cross-party committee will hear from the Islands Strategic Partnership, representing the councils for the Western Isles, Shetland Islands and Orkney Islands. MPs will explore the impact of current fixed links on island communities, views on proposed links and Scotland’s ageing ferry fleet.

MPs will then question engineering consultancy COWI, who are currently working with the Shetland Islands Council on the feasibility study into subsea tunnels to connect Shetland’s archipelago. Questions will focus on these proposed plans to build subsea tunnels in Shetland, considering the role of the UK Government, financing the tunnels and their technical feasibility.
