Business rates questions to be put to Treasury Minister
The Exchequer Secretary to the Treasury, Dan Tomlinson MP, will face questions from the Treasury Committee next Wednesday morning.
Meeting details
This will be a one-off session looking specifically at the Government’s approach to business rates.
It follows announcements in the 2025 Budget that a £4.3 billion package would be available over the next three years to firms whose revaluation is expected to significantly increase their costs. There was also an announcement of a £900 million package to permanently lower business rates multipliers for retail, hospitality and leisure (RHL) properties.
Following the Budget, concerns were still being expressed that some firms would face significant increases in their business rates. When asked in a recent Treasury Committee hearing, HMRC confirmed that 5,100 pubs had seen their rateable value double.
Last week, the Government announced a support package for pubs and live music venues. Other businesses, such as hotels, bistros and cafes, have not been offered additional, tailored support.
MPs are likely to question the Minister on the Treasury’s handling of the announcements and what the future of business rates may look like.
