How to get first time buyers on the housing ladder? Housing and Treasury Ministers questioned on the affordability of home ownership

The Housing, Communities and Local Government (HCLG) Committee will hold a concurrent meeting with the Treasury Committee to question Treasury and Housing Ministers on the affordability of home ownership.

Meeting details

At 9:45am: Oral evidence
Inquiry Affordability of Home Ownership
Minister of State for Housing and Planning at Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government
Economic Secretary to the Treasury at HM Treasury
Deputy Director of Banking and Credit at HM Treasury
Director for Housing Markets and Strategy at Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government

The Committees will question Matthew Pennycook MP, Minister for Housing and Planning, Ministry for Housing, Communities and Local Government (MHCLG), Lucy Rigby KC MP, Economic Secretary to the Treasury, HM Treasury, and HMT and MHCLG departmental officials.

The evidence session will be looking at house prices and affordability. In the context of the Government's commitment to build 1.5m homes in this Parliament, the Committees will also explore the potential impact of housebuilding on affordability.

MPs are also likely to examine the impact of stamp duty, and the Government’s support for lending, such as through the mortgage guarantee scheme, and the announced replacement for the Lifetime ISA. Questions are also likely to cover the Government’s approach to shared ownership and how to make the buying and selling process easier.

The Ministerial session on Tuesday concludes the public evidence sessions for the HCLG Committee’s inquiry on the affordability of home ownership. The HCLG Committee will publish a report with findings and recommendations for Government in the coming months.
