What comes next for Lebanon? Foreign Affairs to hold session
The Foreign Affairs Committee will take evidence on the next steps for Lebanon at 2pm on Tuesday, 27 January 2026.
The election of Joseph Aoun as President of Lebanon and the appointment of Nawaf Salam as Prime Minister of Lebanon in early 2025 signified the end of a two-year deadlock in the Lebanese political system, which had significantly impeded state institutions’ ability to function.
Next week, MPs will hear from expert witnesses on the challenges faced by the Lebanese government, and the efforts it has made to tackle them during its first year.
Meeting details
The Committee is likely to examine the stability of the ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon reached in late 2024, and the likelihood of relations between the nations improving, given the renewed dialogue between the two countries. The Committee could also examine the status of the disarmament of Hizbullah.
Lebanon’s relationship with Syria, including the lasting impacts of an influx of Syrian refugees fleeing conflict under the Assad regime, may also be considered. Cooperation between the UK Government and the Lebanese government, particularly on defence and security matters may also be discussed.
