Mortgage finance and shared ownership examined by Housing Committee: Affordability of Home Ownership inquiry
The Housing, Communities and Local Government (HCLG) Committee continues its inquiry on the affordability of home ownership, by examining shared ownership and mortgage finance.
Meeting details
The cross-party Committee will hear from a range of witnesses including representatives from the National Housing Federation, Shared Ownership Resources, and Nationwide Building Society (see full witness list below).
The HCLG Committee evidence session will be looking at demand-side interventions to help get people into home ownership, focussing on shared ownership and mortgage finance, and examining the affordability, effectiveness, and accessibility of these approaches.
The Committee will be exploring views on the Government’s support for lending, such as the mortgage guarantee scheme, and the range of mortgage products available to first-time buyers. MPs will also explore whether recent changes by the Financial Conduct Authority on macroprudential regulations have had a positive impact on mortgage lending.
On shared ownership, the Committee is likely to examine questions around service charges, leasehold, and how to make ‘staircasing’, the process of buying more shares in the home over time, easier.
