Major events inquiry: MPs to explore challenges and opportunities for sector in first oral evidence session

The Culture, Media and Sport Committeeholds the first oral evidence session of its inquiry examining the challenges faced by the major events industry, and how the sector can tap into new opportunities for growth and collaboration.

Meeting details

At 10:00am: Oral evidence
Inquiry Major events
Board member at Major Event Organisers Association
Chief Executive at LIVE
Vice-Chair at UK Events
At 11:00am: Oral evidence
Work Major events (Inquiry), and State of Play: Business events (Non-inquiry session)
Chief Executive at The ACC Liverpool Group
Director at Events Industry Alliance
Founder and Chief Executive at The Business of Events

The inquiry was launched in the summer to look at examples of best practice across the sector and the role of the UK Government in providing support for events, including internationally recognised sporting competitions, national celebrations and festivals, which generate significant economic activity, media coverage and cultural impact.

Giving evidence will be industry and trade body representatives, with the first part of the hearing focussing on cultural, sporting and music events. MPs are likely to explore the shared challenges faced across the sector such as the impact of rising costs and regulatory burdens. There could also be questions on the cost of policing events and the proposed changes to the law relating to ticket resales.

The Committee announced in April that it would be examining business events as part of its work aimed at spotlighting previously unheard issues and challenges. The second part of the session will give MPs the opportunity to explore topics including the business events sector’s role in driving levels of trade and investment, its global competitiveness and what more the Government could do in terms of support and improving infrastructure.
