Renters & the state of housing in England – Housing Committee looks at the likely impact of the Renters’ Rights Act
On Tuesday morning, the Housing, Communities and Local Government Committee will examine the potential effectiveness of the Government’s policies to improve conditions in the private rented sector, including the Renters’ Rights Act, as part of its inquiry on the condition of homes in England.
Meeting details
The cross-party committee will examine the prevalence and severity of poor conditions in the private rental market and whether the range of policies the Government is pursuing will help improve conditions in the sector.
Witnesses (see full list of witness names below) include campaigners such as Shelter and Generation Rent, representatives from the National Residential Landlords Association and Propertymark, and also witnesses from ACORN, Nationwide Foundation, and the TDS Charitable Foundation.
The session is likely to explore questions around how to empower tenants to raise issues and seek repairs, council enforcement of property standards, and the impact on new regulatory standards on the private rented market.
The evidence session will also explore the potential risks and unintended consequences that may arise from the Government’s approach.
The Renters’ Rights Act includes a series of provisions that are designed to improve conditions by raising standards in the sector and empowering tenants to challenge their landlords over poor conditions.
