How can the Government keep its focus on Sudan? MPs quiz Africa Minister

On Tuesday 28 November the International Development Committee will hold a one-off evidence session exploring the ongoing conflict and humanitarian emergency in Sudan.

Baroness Chapman, Minister of State for International Development and Africa, will give evidence to the Committee, alongside the FCDO’s Africa Director and an ICAI Commissioner. MPs will also hear from other witnesses who have direct experience on the ground.

MPs are likely to ask how the Government will sustain support for Sudan amid sharp cuts to the UK’s aid budget, and a recent reduction in direct support for Sudan and South Sudan as shown in the FCDO’s annual report and accounts.

They are also likely to ask about the Government’s existing support for Sudan, such as the Sudan Support Fund and its ambitions for supporting women and girls.

Sudan is experiencing the largest humanitarian crisis ever recorded. Over 30 million people require humanitarian assistance, including 16 million children. 12 million have been displaced and large-scale atrocities have been reported.

In a report published in October, the Independent Commission for Aid Impact (ICAI) found that Sudan remained one of the world’s most under-resourced crises despite the UK doubling its annual funding. It said the UK’s money and ambition needed to be matched by sufficient staff resources and predictable future funding.

MPs are also likely to ask ICAI Commissioner Liz Ditchburn for an assessment of the Government’s action towards Sudan and what barriers might be getting in the way of greater engagement with local organisations.
