Is the UK doing enough to support life sciences? Committee quizzes NICE and Science Minister on UK’s competitiveness
The Science, Innovation and Technology Committee will hold an evidence session to examine life sciences competitiveness in the UK and the government’s plans to improve this.
In the first panel, the cross-party Committee will hear from the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE), which is responsible for judging the cost-effectiveness of medicines and making them available on the NHS. Questions could be asked about how it makes these decisions, medtech procurement and its ability to effectively meet the commitments in the Life Sciences Sector Plan.

MPs may also ask about the termination of NICE’s work by companies, which have cited NICE’s commercial inflexibility, and its discount rate for costs.
In the second panel, the Committee will question government ministers and the Office for Life Sciences. It may investigate negotiations with industry regarding branded medicines pricing, MedTech, the future of NICE’s assessment process and it can restore its credibility within the sector.
