WEC to examine barriers to women and girls in sport
The Women and Equalities Committee (WEC) will examine barriers to women and girls in sport during a one-off evidence session in Parliament on Wednesday, 29 October.
Meeting details
MPs on the cross-party committee, chaired by Labour MP Sarah Owen, will hear from Baroness Tanni Grey-Thompson, Crossbench Peer, multi-Paralympic gold medallist and Chair of Sport Wales, as well as senior representatives from the Professional Footballers' Association, The Well HQ, Lawn Tennis Association and SupportHERS Collective.
Following a summer of success with the Lionesses winning the Euros and the Red Roses winning the Rugby World Cup, the session will explore a range of topical issues for female sportswomen, including the recent launch of the Government's Women's Sport Taskforce.
It will also look at recent experiences of online abuse and measures being taken to tackle it, barriers to participation in sport among racial and ethnic minority groups and the gender gap in sports and exercise research. WEC’s predecessor Committee published a report in March 2024 on the health and physiology-related barriers to female participation and performance in sport and exercise.
