MPs ask: what is at stake for the UK at COP30?

Ahead of the COP30 climate conference in Brazil next month, MPs will hold an evidence session exploring what the UK should be looking to achieve.

Giving evidence to MPs on the Environmental Audit Committee is Brazil’s Ambassador to the UK, Antônio de Aguiar Patriota, who will present Brazil’s priorities for the summit and identify key challenges that it has identified.

One of Brazil’s priorities for the summit is to strengthen Nationally Determined Contributions, individual countries’ climate plans. Members are likely to ask the Ambassador whether Brazil is satisfied with those NDCs submitted so far, such as the UK’s, and how it will ensure that those NDCs currently overdue are sufficiently ambitious.

MPs will also hear the views of the new Chair of the Climate Change Committee, Nigel Topping, in his first appearance before a Select Committee since being appointed to the role. Mr Topping previously served as UN High Level Champion at COP26, held in Glasgow in 2021.

MPs are likely to explore why COP conferences are important for the UK, how it can demonstrate leadership at these summits, particularly since the withdrawal of the United States, and whether the UK’s concrete financial contributions match its ambitious targets.
