NAO to give view on how public bodies are set up and run
Next Tuesday, the Public Administration and Constitutional Affairs Committee (PACAC) will question Director of Value for Money at the National Audit Office (NAO), Sian Jones, as part of its inquiry into Public Bodies.
Meeting details
The purpose of the session is to examine the Public Bodies landscape and relevant developments since the NAO’s last major examination of the area in 2021.
The NAO previously highlighted inconsistencies in the ways Public Bodies have been established. MPs on the Committee are likely to ask why this is the case and if the NAO feels the Cabinet Office is doing enough to ensure consistency across government departments.
MPs may also choose to discuss whether sponsor departments’ oversight of their Public Bodies is adequate, if they’re being held accountable and, if so, what for.
Following the Government’s announcement of a review of Public Bodies earlier in the year and the closure of NHS England, the Committee may also ask about the impact of abolishing Public Bodies and bringing their functions into a government department.
