New 2025 Budget series begins with session on Chancellor’s tax options
The Treasury Select Committee will hold a number of evidence sessions looking at some of the biggest issues facing the Chancellor ahead of her 2025 Budget. This will begin with a session on tax next Tuesday morning.
Meeting details
MPs will hear from four leading voices on taxation and public finances. Tax Policy Associates founder, Dan Neidle, and Professor Arun Advani, from the Centre for the Analysis of Taxation, will share their views. Prominent economic think-tanks will also be represented, with Helen Miller (Institute for Fiscal Studies) and Ruth Curtice (Resolution Foundation) completing the panel.
The purpose of the session is for MPs to publicly consider the tax options available to the Chancellor, including their potential impacts on behaviour and the amount of revenue they might raise.
This discussion is likely to include potential policies which have been widely debated in recent months such as the introduction of a wealth tax, the freezing of income tax thresholds, and changes to Inheritance and Capital Gains Tax.
Pensions tax reliefs and taxes on landlords may also be discussed.
The Committee may also choose to look at how taxation may need to change in the longer term as well as how the UK’s tax burden compares to other advanced economies.
Further sessions in the 2025 Budget series will be announced in due course.
