Migration Advisory Committee questioned on UK immigration challenges
The Home Affairs Committee will question Chair of the Migration Advisory Committee, Professor Brian Bill, and Deputy Chair Dr Madeleine Sumption, on Tuesday 4 November.
Meeting details
The Migration Advisory Committee is an independent public body, sponsored by the Home Office, that advises the government on migration issues.
The UK has seen unusually high net migration since 2021 due to a number of factors including high levels of student migration, arrivals on Hong Kong and Ukraine visa schemes, and arrivals on work visas. Net Migration is now falling. Net migration in 2024 is provisionally estimated to be 431,000, compared to 860,000 in 2023.
The Government has committed to bring down net migration. In a report published earlier this year, the MAC argued that the composition of migration matters more than net figures when it comes to the impact on the UK economy and wider society.
In this session, the Home Affairs Committee will examine the current work being undertaken by the Migration Advisory Committee and its findings on a range of immigration issues. It will look at the challenges in ensuring immigration to the UK can contribute to the economy and fill skills gaps in the workforce. It will also consider family migration and proposed changes to eligibility for Indefinite Leave to Remain, and how the MAC’s advice informs decisions about immigration policy.
