Committee scrutinises Office for Nuclear Regulation
The Industry and Regulators Committee will hold a one-off session with the Office for Nuclear Regulation, Great Britain’s nuclear safety and security regulator. The Committee will discuss the ONR’s role in overseeing safety at licenced nuclear sites and in regulating the design and construction of new nuclear designs and facilities. The Committee will consider the most significant safety issues facing nuclear sites, including cybersecurity risks, and whether the regulator has the resources and skills it needs to oversee them. The Committee will also examine whether approval processes for new nuclear designs and sites, such as small modular reactors, are smooth enough to meet the Government’s ambitions for new nuclear generation.

- Does the Office for Nuclear Regulation have the resources it needs to effectively oversee nuclear sites and operators?
- Can approval processes for new nuclear plants and designs be made cheaper and quicker without compromising on safety?
- What impact might the Government’s desire for regulators to focus on growth have on nuclear regulation? What changes do you expect from the Nuclear Regulatory Taskforce that the Government has set up?
